6 Reasons to Drink Water

It's no magic bullet, but the benefits of water are many.

water

Americans seem to carry bottled water everywhere they go these days. In fact, it has become the second most popular drink (behind soft drinks). But water lovers got a jolt recently when we heard that a new report had found that the benefits of drinking water may have been oversold. Apparently, the old suggestion to drink eight glasses a day was nothing more than a guideline, not based on scientific evidence.
But don't put your water bottle or glass down just yet. While we may not need eight glasses, there are plenty of reasons to drink water. In fact, drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fluids or foods) is essential to your health.

Street Food in Thailand

Street food is alive and flourishing in Thailand.  It is one of the mysteries of Thailand that although the country sometimes seems to be a vast, open air food market and eatery there are myriads of anorexic young people.

In Bangkok we stay at a hotel on Sukhumvit Road right at "Thong Lo" (but pronounced "Tawng Law" – Sukhumvit Soi 55). On the street there is food of all varieties at all time of the day and night – from fresh fruits (mangos, Thai oranges, longan, apples from Washington, strawberries, durian, rambutan, mangosteen) to coconut rice pancakes (kanom krok, available in the morning, see Siripon, Maker of Kanom Krok) to mouth-watering trays of prepared foods such as curries, basil pork and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. One of our favorite vendors grills sour sausage (succulent with rice grains), sticky rice and haw moek (a fish curry mousse). Another favorite is the night stall with kao ka moo, savory stewed pork leg served over rice with pickled vegetables. Another woman grills chicken livers and pork – her radiant smile proof that someone can be happy cooking on the noisy, polluted streets of Bangkok for almost no money.

How to Order the Best Drink

Lattes, cappuccinos, americanos: The Daily Meal's guide to coffee orders

Coffee

Coffee lovers tend to fall into one of two categories: those who need the brown liquid to jolt them awake for their day, and those who prefer to linger over their cup and identify the different flavor notes. Though the beverage may inspire sighs of devotion or exclamations of salvation, choosing the proper coffee drink can be tricky for even the pickiest of coffee snobs. Even though Starbucks has made the words "latte" and "cappuccino" part of mainstream American culture, most of us are still perplexed as to what the differences are between these drinks. The increasingly strange names created by trendy cafés — what is a Gibraltar? — make figuring out which drink you want before you reach the cash register seem like an impossible task.

Fatty American Food Increasing Heart Disease Abroad

Apparently our burgers and fries are bad for everyone, not just Americans. Wait, that makes sense..

Well, this is not good: Apparently, America's fast-food exportation is not only getting people in other countries hooked on the monstrosities of bacon burgers and fries, but it's also increasing their risk of heart disease.

A new study from the journal Circulation reports that there is a correlation between Western fast-food consumption and heart disease in Singapore, while local fast foods like dumplings or noodles are not linked to heart disease.

"Many cultures welcome [Western fast food] because it's a sign they're developing their economics," lead researcher Andrew Odegaard told Reuters. "But while it may be desirable from a cultural standpoint, from a health perspective there may be a cost."

Is Prison Food Better Than School Food?

Infographic suggests we are feeding our prisoners better than our students

Prison Food, school food

We’ve all heard complaints about our country’s school lunch programs. From campaigns spearheaded by childhood nutrition advocate Michelle Obama to the outcry that ensued when the nation found out the tomato sauce on pizza was considered a vegetable by USDA standards, it’s no secret that the American school lunch program has some serious issues.

Here’s an infographic from Good magazine that takes a new angle – how do our admittedly troubled school lunch programs stand up next to what we're feeding prison inmates in this country? The results are in, and they aren’t too pretty.
